Evacuation Plan

Yes, yesterday we were evacuated from our home. There was a gas leak near the University so they first evacuated campus. I had no idea. I was just sitting at work, oblivious to the "danger" my husband could have been in. (I use quotes, because they actually got things under control really quickly, and the evacuations were more just precaution than necessary.)

I got a call from Brian's mom saying the they heard the campus was evacuated and she couldn't get a hold of Brian so he must be in class. I then tried to call Brian and didn't get an answer. I texted him and had to leave it at that because I didn't know what else to do.

About half an hour later I got a call from him. He was sitting at home because they had been evacuated, but the fire department had just called our apartment saying he was supposed to leave there too. I was about to leave work so we just decided to meet at his grandparents' house, which was only about half a mile further from the leak. Why we had to evacuate and they didn't, who knows?

By the time we both got there the news was saying that the leak was contained and it was safe to go home. So, really, besides Brian getting out of class early, we weren't really affected.

But it has made me think. We have no plan for emergencies. It's always just assumed that we'll be able to reach each other on our cell phones. What if we can't? We need to have some meeting place. We joke that I should just stay put wherever I am, and Brian will bike to me, but what if he can't get to me? It's kind of scary. Also, we don't have 72 hour kits like we should. Maybe this should be the topic of our next family home evening. Probably a good idea.

I've been thinking about those too! Right now, a year supply of food seems a little out of reach. I think I could actually accomplish a 72 hour kit!!! Lets do it!... Wait.. what goes in them?

See what a good Mom I am? I thought about you and the gas leak story - but then, I figured if there was a problem you'd call me. Sorry!
You would call me, right?

Love ya!
